Recently I’ve been approached by a couple of business owners who have had problems with their websites and have been unable, for different reasons, to use their old web designers..

In each case the issue is unique… but there is a very common connection….

One business owner had lost access to their website so they couldn’t update it, the old designer wasn’t answering any calls, but their website was still active on the internet…

Another business owner had agreed with their designer to migrate their site to a new server for them – but in the process of moving something went wrong and the owner was left with a non-functioning website…

A third business owner had their website removed from the internet as the web designer stopped paying for hosting….

Each of these cases could be catastrophic for a business…

Luckily for two of the business owners they had control of their domain name.. The most important part of your online channel. If you have control of your domain name your website and emails are not the responsibility of someone else.

Did you know that you don’t actually own a domain name? it’s more like a lease. So long as you continue to pay the annual subscription, you keep the name and are able to control where it points to. If payments lapse, for any reason, you lose control of the domain and someone else can take it over.

This has been proved in spectacular fashion –

Microsoft forgets to renew hotmail.co.uk domain http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/11/06/microsoft_forgets_to_renew_hotmail/

American Football team forgot to renew the domain name DallasCowboys.com https://www.cnet.com/news/cowboys-fire-coach-forget-to-renew-web-domain/

If you do not know where your domain name is registered or you do not know if its in your name then you do not hold the keys to your website and business emails…

Your domain name is one of the most important parts of your online presence, and you need to make sure you control it and you can get your business back online no matter what happens.
